Adrenal insufficiency united
Adrenal Insufficiency occurs when the body is unable to produce enough cortisol. These hormones help to maintain the body’s functions such as blood pressure, heart muscle tone, sugar, salt balance and more. Just as a Diabetic must take insulin to live, those with Adrenal Insufficiency must take cortisol replacements to live.
During times of illness and injury, people who don't have adrenal insufficiency naturally produce up to 10X the normal amount of cortisol. This extra cortisol is needed because the body must work harder to maintain it’s normal functions until the illness has passed or the injury has been treated so that it is no longer causing extra stress on the body.
Since those with adrenal insufficiency can’t produce enough cortisol to begin with, an immediate additional dose of (cortisol) Solu-Cortef® is necessary to prevent an adrenal crisis. An adrenal crisis can lead to shock, heart failure, disability and even death. Until the cortisol levels are increased so the body is able to maintain its functions, no other treatment will be effective.
Only a few States have Emergency Protocols for Adrenal Insufficiency. As a result emergency responders do not have access to Solu-Cortef®, are not allowed to administer it, and have not been trained on how to treat an adrenal crisis. Sadly, many emergency room personal have not been trained on how to identify or treat an adrenal crisis either. As a result, those with Adrenal Insufficiency must wait and endure needless suffering, longer hospital stays, and risk losing their lives! A $5 injection of Solu-Cortef®, when given immediately, can help to prevent or lessen the severity of an adrenal crisis. It’s just common sense to provide this injection!
We need Emergency Medical Protocols for Adrenal Insufficiency that include the administration of Solu-Cortef® because an ADRENAL CRISIS CANNOT WAIT!
Only by working together will we be able to make policy changes to improve the lives of those with Adrenal Insufficiency. Anyone and everyone affected by Adrenal Insufficiency anywhere in the World is welcome in this group.
